This tool isn't available yet
Compress Image runs on our file-processing service, which is still being set up. Rather than have you upload a file we know we cannot process, we have turned the upload off.
These work right now
They run entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded at all.
Photographs straight off a phone are enormous, and most of that size is detail nobody will ever see. Compress Image re-encodes them at a sensible quality and typically removes 60–80% of the file size.
Why PNG becomes WebP
PNG is lossless. Once an image is a PNG, there is very little left to squeeze out — running it through a "PNG compressor" usually saves a few percent. WebP supports transparency exactly like PNG but compresses like JPG, so the same image often lands at a fifth of the size. Every browser in current use supports it. If you specifically need a PNG, turn the option off.
A note on EXIF
Phone photos carry hidden data: the camera, the settings, the date, and very often the exact GPS coordinates. We strip that by default, because posting a photo of your living room with its coordinates attached is a real thing that happens to people. Turn the option on if you need the data preserved.
Frequently asked questions
Will my photos look worse?
At Light and Recommended, the difference is very hard to see at normal viewing sizes. High and Maximum trade visible quality for size, which is the right call for web images and the wrong one for printing.
How many images at once?
Up to 20 per batch, 100 MB each.
What if an image cannot be made smaller?
We return the original rather than a larger "compressed" version, and say so.
